I've been meaning to get back into the whole blogging thing. In honor of National November Blogging Month or NaNoBlMo or whatever the heck it is called. Really. What is it called? Can I just keep calling it that?
But life keeps happening.![]()
And the stuff that is happening would make for great blog posts. But I can't go there yet.
If ever.
So...I'm still learning Danish. Although I haven't looked at anything Danish related in almost a month.
I dressed up as NO WIRE HANGERS! EVVVVVVEEEERR!! Mommy Dearest (complete with the outrageous eyebrows)
no one knew who I was.
Lil' Bit was supposed to be a Zombie Southern Belle, but being in a foul mood on Halloween, she wouldn't sit through the makeup. So she went as a disgruntled Southern Belle.
finally, upon meeting with her cousin, she instantly changed her mood.
I got a new car.
her name is Britta. And she goes fast. And I love her.
And I had a birthday yesterday. I'm old.
...and other stuff is going on. Like I said. But I'm not ready to go there. Like I said.
maybe one day.
When things settle here.
If things ever settle here.
So yay!
Hey! New Moon comes out soon!! That's something to look forward to!

Quarantined like a bunch of pansies

Welcome, giant pansies. Please feel free to bask in my glow.
Lil' Bit has the flu.
Which means I will probably have/already have the flu.
Fun times, fun times.
Tamiflu is our new best friend (to help ease her of the flu pronto and to keep me from getting sick. but I think it hasn't worked with that last bit, I'm feeling awfully yucky as I write this)
We can't leave the house until her fever has been gone for at least 24 hours.
This means I am stuck in a house with a cranky, sick tween, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and 1 very vocal guinea pig.
Yes, I will probably go crazy. Thanks for thinking it.
Between the countless bowls of chicken noodle soup and glasses of juice, King Julien comes to rescue us from our medieval quarantine (s0 14th century, I'm surprised our front door doesn't have a giant black X on it or something).
I love King Julien.
Lil' Bit loves King Julien.
They didn't have King Julien during the plague (or proper medicine or any hygiene habits to speak of), so we realize how lucky we are to be sick in this age (hugs tamiflu and soap).
So in his own special way, King Julien makes us both feel a little bit better.
Even if we are a bunch of sick, quarantined pansies.
****Also? My dear friend from Washington state who introduced me to Twilight and Edward Cullen after I told her about my unfortunate Trump comb over as a child...? If you are reading this by chance, can you drop me a line? Is everything okay?

The First Month:A look back at my adventures with Danish
It has now been one full month since I started this weird, hurried approach to learning Danish. What have I learned?
Danish is a weird language. Like, the written form of Danish is NOTHING like spoken Danish. Danes don't pronounce the whole word. This has been very hard for me to grasp.
An O is not an O is not an O.
A D is not a D is not a D.
And maybe it is just my ears, but sometimes a b in Danish sounds like an L?? (am I just crazy, or is this true?)
Maybe I make too much spit to speak Danish properly, because at the end of my lessons, my mouth is full of spit. TMI? Sorry.
I find myself replacing English words with Danish words for no apparent reason. Case in point? hvad for what, hvem for who and kommer her for come here. It's so flipping weird. I never did this when I was learning German. SEE? Danish is totally weird like that.
Danish hip hop. Oh boy. On a whim, I thought maybe listening to Danish music would help. I'm already watching Matador. I'm reading the Twilight Saga series in Danish. I thought music would help. Yeah. Not so much. Maybe I should be listening to other types of Danish music? I dunno. Don't get me wrong, Danish Hip Hop usually has a nice beat and the lyrics do flow well but well, I just can't shake the image I have of Denmark and reconcile it with gangster rap. I mean, are the street thugs really that bad in Copenhagen? Something tells me no. Is there a Danish equivelant to the East Coast-West Coast rivalry in American hip hop? Something tells me no.
But I keep prodding on. Once I start something, I can't quit until it is finished. One bright spot is that I can now sort of read Swedish and Norwegian. This helps immensely when I search Swedish and Norwegian newspapers and TV stations for news of the Royals (I love the Scandinavian royal families!) and even though all three countries have English newspapers, it is still nice to be able to look at a site and think to myself "Hey! I can kind of read that!"

The wasteland of blogging
It always happens in late summer. The drying up of posts. Like a heat wave and a pool of water, sucking up every last drop of water till nothing is left.
I have nothing to post here. Nothing is happening. And that makes for a very boring blog. We are going to a rodeo this week, starting tonight. But since it hasn't happened yet, I can't post anything about it. I can post a couple teaser photos, I guess, to keep up some interest. I'm nice like that.
This is always my favorite part of the rodeo. The pumping music, the excitement of the crowd, the hope that maybe this will be the rider that makes it a full 8 seconds.
Bronco riding is exciting too.
I also like to go just to people watch. And since I am taking my camera this year, I hope to get some great shots of someone dressed like this:
Oh. Wait. Wow. Now that's a cowboy.
Don't know where that came from, what I meant to post was something like this:
Ohhhh, chaps. Yeah, I will see lots of that.
Back to my post, what I hope to capture on film is the elusive Rhinestone Cowboy in his native landscape. Since I will be on his turf, I am hoping at least one or two will step away from the shutes long enough for me to snap a photo.
Porter Wagoner, the original Rhinestone Cowboy.

Eventyr med Dansk (adventures with Danish)(I think)
I'm learning a new language. Danish. Which would lead to my studying of Swedish and Norwegian at some point (They are similar). I was told it would be easy. I was told I would pick it up fast since I have 3 years worth of college level German under my belt (thinks fondly of Dr. Wohlert and the German by Satellite program).
NOT SO MUCH.
Maybe because I am getting older, my language skills are lacking. For whatever the reasons, I am having a really hard time grasping a new language. Maybe it's the fact that sometimes, a "B" will sound like an "L" in certain words, but not every B sounds like a L in all the words. Or maybe it is the fact that it sounds like (when reading Danish sentences aloud) that complete letters and even words are left out, despite them plainly being in the sentence. That's when I listen again to the phrase and sure enough, the printed sentence doesn't match the spoken words.
And that's when I get angry at myself and tell myself I WILL NEVER GET THIS AND I SHOULD GIVE UP and go eat some ice cream to comfort myself and cry while listening to Danish hip hop.
Rød Grød med Fløde. If you can't say this in Denmark, they will kick you out.
I'm kidding.
Sort of.
But really, it seems that when one can finally say Rød Grød med Fløde, they have it made. The heavens open up and all understanding of the Danish language is yours for the taking. Unfortunately for me, when I try to say it, it just sounds like I have a bunch of marbles in my mouth and I drool a lot trying to get my tongue to cooperate.
But as the video also shows, Danish speakers sometimes have trouble with English as is evidenced by them trying to say "The squirrel is in the refrigerator.".
It's nice to know it can be a two way street when learning a new language.

It's the most wonderful time of the year...
for a pyromaniac.
Fireworks. I've managed to stumble through 33 Fourth of July celebrations only to learn this: Fireworks are not legal everywhere.
It's weird to me. I grew up surrounded by Firework tents that sprang up everywhere during the weeks before July fourth. Don't know what a firework tent is? Imagine a circus tent with fireworks inside. Fireworks as far as the eye can see. Dragon Farts, Black Cat firecrackers, Roman candles, artillery shells, snappers, fountains, you name it.
Neighborhood kids-and sometimes their parents- descend on the streets and empty lots to shoot off all types of rockets and firecrackers. Never once did I think doing this was illegal somewhere. I guess my small town naivete is showing. Even more? No one cares. No one complains to the cop (yes, I said cop. My town has only ONE)(Yes, I live in a town that small) about those darn kids shooting of fireworks. It's just expected that the local pyromaniacs, young and old will do this every year. A rite of passage if you will.
So it was nothing when Manly Man called me up on Sunday afternoon and asked if I could go pick up this years firework show for the farm. I felt honored. This is something that usually he and his dad do together. You know, father-son bonding. But since Manly Man is working in Michigan and won't be home until the 3rd, I, his loving and loyal wife, agreed to pick them up.
We have a store here that sells nothing but fireworks year round. This is sort of like a local Mecca for the pyromaniacs. All sorts of wonders can be found down every aisle. This year, my task involved man handling a pallet of 100 artillery shells and various other delights, like The Godfather and Desert Shower and Supa Man Delight. I don't really know what the latter will do, but I can tell you that artillery shells are the big ones that go way up in the sky, go boom and make the big pretties in the dark sky. I know you love it when I get technical on my blog.
But anyway. So I have all this crap in the trunk of my car. Major explosives in my car. And there's probably a joke in there somewhere, but I'm too tired right now to think of one.
Where was I? I have a point.
Oh! Yes, fireworks not being legal everywhere.
So I was chatting on facebook, as one is want to do while drinking a beer and watching Letterman, and she was telling me about her plans to go to a park to watch the fireworks. I asked her why she didn't have her husband and kids go buy some and have their own fireworks show in their backyard. And she laughed at me.
Yeah. She actually LOL'd out loud at me. And then she pointed out that the only legal fireworks they could shoot off were those damn sparklers and those irritating firecrackers and those snapper thingies you throw on the ground and they, surprise, surprise, snap.
And I'm sorry, but I just cannot comprehend this. I, who am surrounded by firework tents and the fireworks version of Wal Mart and neighborhood kids getting together to share a lit punk and mutal fireworks. I just can't.
So I did what any self respecting woman of 33 would do. I went outside with Lil' Bit and we shot off fireworks. We were soon surrounded by a mass of kids and soon I was passing around the lit punk so spinning Camillias could be lit, or the Battle of the Bulge could be re-enacted with firework tanks that actually moved and shot little balls of fire out of the guns or so the oldest kid could take a big fountain into the empty lot and shoot off 25 rounds of a firework called Color Pearl.
We are having so much fun.
It's like Christmas day. But with gunpowder.

Just a sip
I have a few high quality stills of New Moon.
Now the thing is, do I want to post them yet?
Let me tell you, I have been stalking the net. THE WHOLE THING. You see last year at this time, I had an awesome German Twilight site at my disposal that was getting hit with a whole bunch of apparent Catherine approved leaks almost every day Twilight was in production. This year, the well is dry my friends, the well is dry.
The production level has been stepped up to that of a real film for New Moon. I guess it's good in some ways. But in some ways, I miss the flood of behind the scenes stuff we were getting last year from Catherine. She loved the fans. SHE UNDERSTOOD THE OBSESSION. She let Twi-hards have free range of the sets. She did not care, unless they tried to kidnap RPattz or something.
Let me direct you here:
Ropes of Silicone, for a few measly stills. There is at least one of Edward there, so it's not all lost.

Summer Camp

Ahh, summer camp. It's where Lil' Bit is at this very moment. I know. You're probably thinking hiking, swimming, riding horses, learning how to make s'mores around the campfire, right?
Yeah, that's what I was thinking to.
But nooooooooooooooooooooooo, because where she is camping is being hit with rain almost daily. I'm not talking about cute little summer showers. I mean the big bad storms. And really, can you lay off the storms for just a bit Mother Nature while my little girl tries to have a good time?
It must really suck to be stuck inside your cabin for most of the duration of your camp stay. And I've been told even though her cabin mates are cool, there is no electricity in her cabin and did I know about this absence of electricity before I sent her there?
She may never know just how much full disclosure I had of the whole no electricity thing.
She might never talk to me again.
So here is to hoping she gets at least a few days to swim, go hiking, ride horses and sit around a campfire and make s'mores with her new friends without the threat of tornadoes, lightening and down pours of rain.
And hurry up and come home, I miss you.
